After the release of my gay erotic romance, TIE 'EM UP, HOLD 'EM DOWN, and its sequel, HANGIN' WITH MY WINDOW MAN, I read a contemporary m/f romantic suspense involving a man convicted of stealing diamonds. He'd had a partner who was killed, and the diamonds were never found. After his release from prison, he fathered a little girl.

This author also writes a futuristic series under a pseudonym, and what intrigued me was stumbling on a sequel to the original story which was set fifty years after the theft. The daughter is all grown up now, and when her troublesome father pops back into her life the hunt for the diamonds begins again.

When I stumbled on those two stories, I thought it would be fun to write a story set in the future featuring descendants of my firefighters in TIE 'EM UP and HANGIN'. I could see the opening scene clearly, but it was two years before the thrust came to develop the idea. The INTO THE FUTURE AMBERPAX™ needed one more author to write a story for it.

And today it's here, although with a fresh opening scene.

THE STORY

Duty robbed them of their last night together. A deadly fireball struck Earth’s New L.A. in the late afternoon, and instead of an evening of dinner and passion with his lover, Battalion Chief David Garrison reported for duty and led his elite firewarrior squadron to fight the raging flames engulfing historic LA. At first light the next morning, duty sent David’s lover, Dillon Rapner, a special agent, off-world undercover to ferret out the source of the incendiary bombs destroying Old Town.

During his search, Dillon was captured and enslaved for several years on another planet. Only thoughts of returning to David, the man he would love forever, kept him alive and determined to escape. Never in his wildest imaginings did he expect that when he returned to Earth he’d find another man in David’s bed—but he did...

EXCERPT

...As Dillon talked, he reached for the bottom of his shirt and pulled it over his head and off.

Even as weary as he was, David’s groin tightened at the sight of that familiar, well-muscled chest, the heat and touch of which he knew. He stopped chewing.

“Tomorrow we’ll start work. It’s possible we can make some sales here.” Their cover was as salesmen, but in code the words conveyed the message that they’d search for the source of the phosphorus and other rare elements used in the fireballs as well as for a launching station.

David knew finding these things would be a dead giveaway this planet was the bomb source. In response to diplomatic inquiries, Oragone’s Supreme Authority had denied the attacks originated there, and even the Intergalactic Council couldn’t budge them on this, but the launches continued. The fact was, unless the fireballs were shot from some undetected space vehicle, their planet was in the right trajectory and orbit to have launched them.

“Find the sons of a gun, man,” David said. As a warrior, he wanted to stop having to kill the havoc created by the incendiaries. It was unbelievable to him that their enemies didn’t seem to know they were firing on a basically dead part of the city. The more terrifying part was wondering what would happen if they ever figured that out.

As Dillon talked, his gold and amber eyes seemed to bore into David’s as he unbuckled the belt on his trousers and slid the zipper down with deliberate slowness.

David almost choked on the food in his mouth as he heard its casual whisper and watched it reveal black boxer briefs, which should be as sleek as Dillon’s sports car, but right now housed a large bulge straining their front. Dillon discarded the dark slacks and briefs, then turned and leaned over to fold his slacks and lay them on the bed. The smooth roundness of a butt that was at once firm and yet not so hard it didn’t have a sexy give when squeezed, hid the bunghole at the base of the crevice between its globes. His balls swung loose and low between thighs David knew weren’t as large as his own, but were still hard and powerful. Waves of sensation rushed through him as images of the unbridled sex they’d planned for that last night flashed like a kaleidoscope in his head.

The camera’s lens zoomed in close as Dillon turned. “I’ll show you mine, if you’ll show me yours.”

“I’m certain Mallory can give us his prospective on the true Stonehenge,” Nerissa continued.

You can’t possibly be serious.

But Nerissa was serious. She kept fondling her beaded necklace, along with wetting her lips and darting glances at Mallory. Preening gestures.

Turning to go back to the lawn chair and her sketchpad, she was stopped by a touch on her arm.

“I believe the idea is that you and I pair up as well.” Matthew Limner gazed down at her, looking less green than he had before. “Just for the duration of this visit, of course. Unless you have other plans?”

...The blood smell filled Alex’s nostrils, stirring his thirst. He could have healed the man by licking the wound, but he risked losing control over satisfying his blood thirst and draining him if he tasted him. He let the blood flow. It wasn’t a life-threatening wound.

“Broken, is it? Tsk, tsk,” Alex said. He leaned down.

“No!” Guido cried in terror as he tried to roll away.

“Not to worry. I won’t bite,” he whispered in guttural tones only his victim could hear. “There is, after all, some discrimination and honor among my kind.” Alex pressed a vital spot in Guido’s neck and knocked him out.

Alex wiped the knife on the sleeve of Guido’s coat and slid the blade into an inner pocket in his jacket. He looked down at Dante. “Are you injured?”

Dante shook his head. “You’re very good at this. I’m in your debt.”

Alex stiffened at the sight of the small gun in Dante’s hand.

“Mine. Couldn’t get to it until you freed me, and by the time my shaky hands got it out of my ankle holster, you didn’t need my help.” He re-holstered the weapon.

Alex smiled and took a good look at Dante now he had the chance. The eyes were even deeper and more mysterious in the dark. His lips promised delicious satisfaction in the act of love. Considering the whole, it wasn’t just Dante’s remembered ass sending shivers of desire shooting through Alex’s belly to his groin. Alex released some hold on his control and let himself hear the wildly beating heart and feel the rush of blood bounding through the arteries in Dante’s neck.

On impulse, he reached down and gave the man Dante a hand up, then he gazed into Dante’s eyes as he drew him close inch by inch, ready to release him at the slightest resistance—and hoping he’d be able to do so. In the breathless silence that followed, he cupped his hands and cradled Dante’s face in them. Slowly, he ran his thumbs over Dante’s cheeks, enjoying a heat so different from the unnatural coolness of his own.

“Are you sure you’re all right?”

Dante’s warm breath held the faint hint of a mellow wine. His gaze locked on Alex’s and he spoke in a breathy voice, as if entranced by the hands on his face. “Mostly shaken up. My arm and throat will be sore tomorrow, but I’m okay.”

Alex’s plan to demand he be told why this human followed him, dissolved. Instead, unable to resist his urges, Alex leaned in to capture the seductive lips with his mouth. Thoughts of anything else fled.

Dante stiffened, and Alex thought perhaps he’d been wrong, perhaps this man wasn’t gay. Or maybe he wasn’t as attracted to Alex as Alex was to him, or as stirred up from the fight as he was. Then, as Alex softened his mouth and deepened the kiss, Dante’s body relaxed and he responded hungrily with an exploring, searching tongue, as if he, too, needed release in the aftermath of the attack—to let go of the fear and, in a good fuck, exhaust the stockpiled chemicals his body had triggered so he might fight or flee.

Overworked homicide lieutenant Gabe Harris has his fill of women... and dead bodies. The women he can handle. The dead bodies-- unfortunately they keep piling up. But on this particular case he meets a young woman that not only impedes his investigation, but she also has no interest in him. A healthy ego like his can’t handle that. He’ll have to keep an eye on Ms. Minx Tobin.

EXCERPT:

The Tobin woman had been surprised by his offer of dinner, but not as surprised as he was himself. Gabe drove onto Santa Monica Boulevard all the while wondering what the hell he had been thinking.

She'd been right; strictly speaking, about fraternizing with a suspect. He was mixing pleasure with official police business. Dynamite that was guaranteed to explode in his face.

He glanced over at his reluctant passenger. Sitting stiffly in the passenger seat, she held her handbag against her chest as if it were a shield offering protection.

Not that she'd need it against him; she wasn't his type. She was lean and athletic. He preferred his women to be of the buxom variety.

And, come to think of it, he might not be her type either. She seemed to have a preference for Brandi Evans' company.

"Where are we going to eat?" Minx asked, turning her dark eyed gaze on him.

Minx. What a helluva name. She hadn't like it when he used it. Her plump lips had turned down imperceptibly. He'd noticed though. It was his job to be observant.

He stopped at a light and looked over at her again. "I thought since we both seem to gravitate toward Valentin's Bistro, we'd go there."

She didn't comment. By the narrowing of her eyes, he could tell she was in a snit. Perhaps he couldn't blame her. She'd just eaten at the bistro last night, although she wasn't aware that he knew that fact.

He parked alongside Valentin's and turned off the engine before noticing the sign on the door proclaiming the bistro to be closed.
"That's strange," he said, more to himself than to the woman.

"It certainly is," she agreed. "I was just here last night. I sure hope it's not closed permanently."

Gabe started up the car again. "Maybe Valentin had an emergency." Whatever was the reason, he'd have to check it out. Later.

So now what? This little tête-à-tête with Minx Tobin was turning out to be a really lousy idea.

A light flickered, then held, allowing Talia to get her bearings.

Talia curbed her impulse to move further back in her chair. She considered her reply. What Penelope said was true. Edmund hadn't mentioned her. But how could she tell that to his grandmother?

The rocking chair went back and forth. "Naughty boy. Edmund always was a naughty boy. Not like..."

Talia waited. Not like whom?

Perhaps Penelope forgot what she was going to say for she changed the subject. "She told you about me, though. Didn't she? Told you I had a few screws loose, eh?"

There could be no doubt as to whom Penelope referred--Celeste, Edmund's mother. Talia hedged on her answer. "Celeste did mention that your bedroom is right next to mine. This is such a lovely house. And your room is so interesting."

Truth be told, she couldn't see much other than Penelope, the tiny lamp, and the shuttered window to her right.

Penelope nodded, a sullen look on her face. "Secrets," she crooned. "Everyone has secrets. She has a secret. I have a secret." A crafty expression crept into her eyes. "And so do you!"

"Oh!" Talia didn't expect that remark. Somehow it perturbed her. She moved to the edge of the seat. "I should get back now, Granny. Edmund is bringing up my--"

"Here." Penelope thrust something at her.

Without thinking, Talia took the object. It was a book. A brown paper covered book smaller than the length of her open hand.

The title on the front was all but worn away. She couldn't read the words in this dim light.

"What's this, Granny?"

"It's a book," Penelope snapped, probably thinking Talia was an imbecile.

"I mean, what's it for, Granny?"

Penelope nodded. For several seconds, she continued to bob her weary head. "Spells and potions. Rituals and ceremonies. It's my secret. One of my secrets. Use the book as the need strikes you."

"You mean it's magic?"

"Perhaps," Penelope purred. "You go now. You'll see your true love soon."

This was a little too crazy even for Talia's open-minded upbringing. She couldn't wait to escape.

In the Muddle of a Book

There are times when you have an idea that is so good, it grabs you by the scruff of your neck and won't let go -- until you come to a dead end and it runs for the exit. But it's left in a file on your desktop, lurking there, snagging your cursor and accidentally popping up again, sparking an idea of how to continue -- then just as you reach what would be the middle of your book, yep, it takes another vacation.

There's a second axiom in the writing business -- "Don't ever write about a writer!" Editors, in their infinite wisdom, have decided that writers aren't interesting characters. We probably aren't. But once in a while we have an interesting observation, have an experience out of the ordinary -- whatever. Well, the vagrant idea I have is about a writer who is in the right place at the right time and has enough talent to be fast-tracked into literary limelight.

I'm in the middle of the book -- what we writers call the "Muddle" --where many an author has thrown up his hands and dumped the whole file into the "recycle" bin. But I am trudging onward, knowing that my writer can handle whatever I throw at her. She can work her way of of the Muddle -- and still get the guy.

Somewhere there is an editor who has never bought into the idea that writers can't be heroes or heroines. All I have to do is find her!

Diana found the portables, and, when using one of them, was careful to touch as little as possible so as not to pick up an illness, protecting her hand with paper even as she unlocked the door. As she exited, she was intent on tossing the paper in a trash can and didn't see the man until he grabbed her arm and pulled her toward a dark alley. Although there were people lined up to use the toilets, a fight had broken out over someone who'd crowded in, and no one noticed she was being accosted.

Indignant at what the man was doing, she cried, "Let go of me!" and opened her mouth to scream.

A fat, greasy hand clamped over it before she could. His breath was fetid and he smelled of urine. Panic stopped her breath. She sought to calm down by telling herself Phebe would find her if she didn't return. When she thought of the enormous crowds and how difficult it would be to get help, dismay rocked her. Her heart raced. She thought her blood pressure must be off the chart.

If she was to get away, she had to do it herself. Stomping on the man's instep and managing to bite his little finger when he loosened his hold on her mouth, she got out one good scream before he grabbed her hair and slapped her. Tears stung her eyes from the pain. He grabbed her arm and twisted it up behind her back.

"Quiet, bitch, or I'll break it."

He will, too. Oh, God, what am I going to do?

The afternoon sun was beginning to set, and panic was creeping up on Lance because he hadn't found the women. He'd been listening all afternoon for the notes of the cat's eye. It was a small stone, not a gem, so its song was softer and more difficult to hear over the sounds of the bands and revelers. It was fortunate there were few real gems in this crowd to override its tones. Most of it was costume jewelry. At last, he heard its hum. Like a global positioning system, his ears told him where she was.

He heard Diana scream. Heard how quickly it was cut off.

Fighting his way through the crowd as he followed the cat's eye hum, he saw her being mauled and hauled off by a nasty-looking man who would have snapped her arm on a whim. At least he was only a man. Lance sensed that in seconds. Two strides into the alley, and Lance had clipped him behind his ear. The man released Diana and dropped like a stone.

He'd never get up again.

Lance reached for her as she stumbled at the sudden release of her arm, catching her before she fell to the ground. Turning, she recognized him. She reached for him as if she were drowning. He held her tight. His heart thought his chest was a drum. He felt hers pounding like a Thoroughbred's on a racetrack. Emotion welled up in him at how close she'd come to being hurt, and his mouth found hers, just as hers reached up to him.

He drank in her fear and her sweetness, letting his groin swell and his balls tighten. He slid his hands to her buttocks and cupped her hard against him as she opened her mouth and tongue to him. Soulful, sultry... exceptionally superb!

Her newest release MOCKINGBIRD attracted me as it has a number of cover remakes, a few of which were already on my favorites list, such as "Both Sides Now" originally performed by Joni Mitchell (fans of the movie LOVE ACTUALLY will also recognize this song.) Allison Moorer does the song justice, along with every other song, including her originals, on the album.

Great muse music... to set the mood... or just to unwind after a hectic day.

The plot itself is fun to read with elements of suspense, romance and the paranormal. The dialogue is engaging... BUILDING PASSION has been holding it's own in the Awe-Struck list of books at Fictionwise.com. For about five weeks it was #1 and has been bouncing around the top ten lately. I think people actually like it. If sales aren't fairly steady a book tends to drop like a rock.

Getting back to work on other projects is sometimes pretty hard. You have a big idea, and it works for a while, then you read it over and have to keep yout index finger off the "Delete" key, take a deep breath and unravel it back to where you went wrong -- just like knitting a sweater.

Of course, a writer is only as good as her last book. Yep, back to the keyboard!

BUILDING PASSION has been up on Fictionwise only nine days, and already it is the #1 book on Awe-Struck's bestsellers list. It's #27, up from #28 on Fictionwise's Romance bestseller's list.

Yesterday, I was featured on RomanceExcerptsOnly Yahoo list and it was wonderful to get such a nice response from the romance readers there as they read the excerpts I led them to -- not just for Building Passion, but for THE HARDEST STEP, FUNNY BUSINESS and DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH. I had nice little notes from a few people who saw books they thought they might like to read.

I gave away a file of BUILDING PASSION in a drawing, and the winner seemed very pleased.

The neat thing is that ONCE AGAIN A PRINCESS, which is published by Hard Shell Word Factory and that I also sent readers to, came way up on Hard Shell's list today. Okay, so I know there are times that it doesn't take much. But it is important to me.

I've ordered fifty print copies of BUILDING PASSION to sell to my friends who collect my books. I can give them a pretty good price on them -- autographed and with a piece of quilting fabric in them. This time I might put the recipe for my husband's pasta salad in there, too!

BUILDING PASSION has been available since June 23 at Awe-Struck E-Book but such is the state of electronic publishing that the real debut of a book is when it comes up on Fictionwise, right?

Well, I'd been watching for it every day, knowing that this is vacation time --the Fourth of July was in there, if you recall. Yesterday I checked in the morning -- nothing. Then I checked in the afternoon -- I was not obsessing -- and there it was! BUILDING PASSION with its lovely cover! So I checked to see where it was on the Awe-Struck sort of Fictionwise and it was # 5! That meant someone had bought a copy. KD Struck, the co-owner of Awe-Struck confirmed it. That made my day! Someone bought my book the day it came out. Now, that's a fan.

But I scrolled lower and found that DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH was # 10, up from # 16. Now, I'd had correspondence from a friend a few days before and she said she'd just loaded DIAMOND onto her handheld reader. Well, that might account for # 16, but it would take another sale to get up to # 10.

Granted, when an author has a book out, the publicity often drags old releases back up the list. That's an advantage of electronic publishing -- the backlist is still available, unless the author has decided to pull an older title for some reason.

I love my fans! I really do!

BUILDING PASSION will be released tomorrow in ebook form from Awe-Struck E-Books. The stress of this plus a lot of little things threw me into an attack of shingles four weeks ago and at this point I'm bearly hanging on. The hot weather in Tennessee is really making me uncomfortable.

I've gotten good reviews from five sites, and that pleases me no end. I just hope people who like a good a good, solid romance with a lot of stress and strain from the background of family, friends and a few enemies will like this book.

One of the great things about writing books is that you get to hold something in your hands that has your name on it. Well, not with ebooks. We used to get them on a little diskette, but no more -- which is okay. And I've had the thrill of having BUILDING PASSION in print before. Heck, I had the thrill of going into a book store and seeing a display of 24 copies face out! Whoa! And the trouble was, I didn't have anyone with me to enjoy the moment -- had to go round up my kids and force them to look at my book.

But I digress. Right now I'm in the process of getting the small-run printer to print my book. I call -- I punch the right extension number -- I get a recording. I leave my information -- I don't get a call back. The next day, I call -- I punch the right extension -- I get a recording. I leave my information -- I don't get a call back. Tomorrow, I'm going to try mental telepathy! I think it will work just about as well.

But I have digressed again. I started this particular message with the idea I'd invite you to subscribe to a newsletter I am starting. The Excitement Is Building

In about six weeks, BUILDING PASSION will be released by Awe-Struck E-Books. Today I wrote out a bit for Awe-Struck's promotion, the FLASH! I'm so glad that they are reinstating their promotional newsletter. We authors need all the help we can get when it comes to promotion.

Like most writers, I'd rather sit at my computer in sweats and slippers than get out and meet people. I don't like to talk about myself, and if I talk about my book very much, you'll know all about it, and then--why buy it! (Well, you probably would. But that's a lot for me to go through!)

I have to travel long distances to see anyone. It's thirty miles to a bookstore, either in Morristown or Knoxville. And many times, when a writer does set up a signing, snafus happen -- or no one shows up -- and then my feet start to hurt. I'm not charming when my feet hurt.

BUILDING PASSION is a really good book. I wrote it when my daughter was about fourteen or fifteen, and being conscious that any minute she might read it over my shoulder, I considered what I would want her or not want her to read. Well, my granddaughter is older than that now, and kids are a lot more mature these days, but even with a few changes made, BUILDING PASSION is still suitable for a teen to read, and it is still entertaining for adults.

It Seems Like Yesterday

I'm one of the original members of an organization named EPIC -- the Electronially Published Internet Connection -- which is for published authors and publishing professionals who are devoted to being published electronically. We do accept authors who have a signed contract with a publishing house, either print of e.

Now, this is hard to believe. Florence Moyer and I started this thing way back September of 1997. We had both been to RWA that year in Orlando, and had gotten interested in epublishing, but when we went back home (never knowlingly having crossed paths) we kept bumping into each other on the Net and also bumping into a couple of "publishers" who knew nothing about publishing -- that was obvious!

When she came up with the idea and emailed me, I said, "That sounds like a great idea, but how would you do it?" Well, three hours later, she had!

After am enthusiastic but sometimes rocky start, we go going, and how! At last count, we had about 510 members, and growing.

I'm proud to have served two years as President -- my second term ended this month. Next year, when we gather in March for our annual conference in Virginia Beach, we'll celebrate a Tenth Anniversary. Yeah, I know we'll be a little early, but it's never too early to have a party. And this is the most fun writing group I've ever been a part of!

I'm a proud member of EPIC -- Electronically Published Internet Connection -- which is a group of authors and other industry professionals active in producing ebooks!

WOW! Have we seen growth this past year! First, a little history. Ebooks have been around only about ten years. Oh, yes, the instructions you might have printed off on an old computer qualifies in a way as being an electronic book, but we are speaking of primarily recreational reading. Unfortunately, none of us thought back then that we should keep track of how many ebooks were released in 1998 -- our loss.

But, this past year, electronic publishing was the ***only*** segment of publishing that actually increased receipts without raising the price of their units sold. And we are responsible for $1,100,000,000 in sales! 1.1 BBBBBillion dollars. Books, newspapers, magazine, texts are sliding in numbers of items sold.

How do we know that the ripple has become a groundswell? Well, there are several ways we can tell.

Fictionwise.com , the #1 distributor/seller of ebooks is showing more and more books first published by best-selling authors previously (in some cases waaay reviously) published in print. Because we're growing -- and they are saddled with much more overhead than we do, though we do have overhead.

Fictionwise, by the way, had grown in sales by something like 72% a year for about three years. Growth might be slowing somewhat, but the overall growth in our industry is 35%. Whew! That means that three years from now, we'll double yet again!

Those publishers and agents who have heretofore looked only to print authors for manuscripts and clients are looking for and signing electronically published authors to repackage their ebooks and provide them with new manuscripts.

The mushooming genres in ebooks are erotica, blended genres (ie, science fiction/fantasy, historical/suspense, etc.) and the print publishers are trying to catch up to us. This attests to the fact that the most creative, forward thinking writers are published electronically.

So, if you are reading ebooks, you are ahead of the curve! You are a groundbreaker just as we who write for electronic media have been.

I think I mentioned that BUILDING PASSION is going to be republished by Awe-Struck. Even though it is not scheduled for release until June, there are several steps to go through beFore then.

Right now, I am going through the galleys. Now, with print books, we used to get a printout of the pages, the pages still all attached to each other. For a 75,000 word book, you would end up with about 400 pages, in very faint Courier that always had an impossible deadline to get back to the editor -- giving you something like two days to go through them.

A bit later, we started getting page proofs -- they looked like the page in the book -- and depending on the publisher, you might need to return only the pages you made corrections on.

Now with ebooks, you get the galley back by email, and you send your corrections by email. A much better method. For one thing, your arm doesn't got to sleep holding your manuscript in line at the Post Office.

But another advantage with ebooks is that even after the book comes out, if you find a mistake, you can have the editor correct it in subsequent copies. Considering my visual problems and my typing inaccuracy, and the fact that a degree in English really hasn't helped my spelling all that much, I love this technology!

Good Things Come To Those Who Wait

And I have waited until the end of this year.

This summer I typed every single word of my first published book into my computer so I could send it to one of my electronic publishers. Why? The book was written on an old Smith Corona Office Electric and the carbons and corrected MS are long gone.

Last night the publisher put out a call for a book to be suggested to be moved from 2007 to next June. In this business, that is getting to be a tough schedule. But possible, if the book has already been edited and published once. All I had done was update it here and there, and it's already under contract. This morning she told me we are a go!

So look for BUILDING PASSION from Awe-Struck in June of 2006!

I have a book for late fall/getting close to Christmastime. The hero is a veteran football player and the heroine is a sports reporter. The setting it Pittsburgh, back in the glory days of the Steelers. It's available from Hard Shell Word Factory and their outlets (like Fictionwise).

Of the long line of taxis generally pulled up the sweeping curve at the front of the airport, only one remained, its yellow sides crusty with grime and salt, remnants of the weekend of slush.

Callahan groaned. The wind caught his reddish hair and he tried to smooth it with a hand bearing scraped knuckles.

"Where are you going?" Magda asked, shivering.

"I've got a condo in the Downtown Towers," he said.

"Come on, we'll share," she suggested smiling up at him sympathetically. "I'm going back to the office. In fact, the Press is paying."

The grim-faced driver leaned over the back of the seat to open the door for them, and Magda scrambled in quickly. "Downtown," she told him, unburdening herself of her gadget bag.

When Callahan tried to get into the car, his injured left knee didn't hold him and he fell against Magda unexpectedly, pressing her against the back of the seat and nearly cutting off her breath.

In a moment of cosmic awareness, they stared into each other's eyes. Magda could see the stress in his expression and knew more than a bruised knee was bothering him.

"This is decent of you," Callahan said, settling into the seat with his flight bag between them. "I didn't give you much of an interview."

"So what?" Magda shrugged. "You're obviously not in very good spirits. What time is your appointment this morning?"

"When I get there," he said, looking ahead into the darkness.

"How soon will you know if you can play next week against the Rams?" she asked, wondering if he realized she was interviewing him, committing his responses to memory.

"Sooner than I want to," he said crisply.

"On the spot?"

Callahan laughed, a touch of irony in his tone. "Aren't we all?"

It occurs to me that visitors to this site might like to read an excerpt and see a cover from of a book that has been out in electronic format for a longer time and has a bit of a track record. BUILDING PASSION Gets New Life

My first published book is BUILDING PASSION, published by Harlequin American Romances back in July of 1983. It was # 15 in the series, which means it was bought long before the series began coming out. Awe-Struck E-Books will be republishing BUILDING PASSION late in 2006.

The story is set int he Florida building trade and resort scene, and one of the rules I broke was to make the heroine's younger brother and sister important characters in the plot. I also went into the hero's viewpoint after consulting with the editor on ways to make his motivation more transparent. On top of that, the heroine was the first on a Harlequin cover to be wearing blue jeans!

BUILDING PASSION sold over 107,000 copies in the U.S. and Canada, went into four translations and topped out at selling a quarter of a million copies world wide. I hope it will get a good reception this second time around.

They are hosting a multi-author signing from 1PM-7PM on August 13th as part of the annual seafood festival, and I'll be there with some other Flowers and Hearts others, including event organizer Arline Chase. Here's queen of the passwords finally back from the isolation cell. No matter what I did, or didn't do, Blogger would not agree that my password was right. This is my fourth change. Sigh. So what's new with Jane Toombs? My thriller High Risk from Champagne Books is doing well on Fictionwise. My novella, "The Tuquoise Mask" in Tales From The Treasure Trove I Anthology from Whiskey Creek Press comes out in September. And I'm off to Reno next week for the Romance Writers Of America annual conference. There are about 8000 members now, but only about 2500 will be at the conference. Since I used to live 30 miles from Reno I'll be looking up friends as well. My Viking and I now live on the south shore of Lake Superior in Michigan's beautiful Upper Peninsula. Beautiful--and colder than you know what in the winter. So we defect to Lakeland, FL for a few of the winter months. The third member of our household is Kinko, our calico cat, who is an outdoor/indoor cat--often as many as ten or so times a day. We call her the Mighty Hunter since she averages about three mice a week. She's never caught a bird, which makes us, though not her, happy. Feel free to respond, ask question, tell mewhat you're up to--whatever. Jane

I'm pleased to announce that I've secured a grand prize to celebrate the official release of BOOK OF DAYS in electronic format later this year.
